The opportunity to go to college is a blessing because not everyone has the same opportunity.

College is the best time to shape your future. Therefore, college time needs to be used to maximize your potential. Nearly four years of college is more than enough time to prepare for the real world.

While in college, don’t just focus on learning to train technical skills and pursue high scores. In real life, high scores are not the main factor determining success.

The determining factor is the soft skills needed in the work environment and real life, such as communication skills, cooperation, problem-solving, critical thinking, decision-making, organization, and other soft skills. Those soft skills will not be fully trained by simply going to college.

Here are some essential activities while in college to maximize your potential and soft skills to prepare for facing the real world.

Join Organization

Organizational life on campus is the best place to develop soft skills. Organizations are a collection of many people with various backgrounds and mindsets. The organization is a concrete laboratory for how real social life occurs.

There are so many choices of organizations that you can join on campus, ranging from sports, arts, politics, religion, or many kind of hobbies.

Student organizations during college can also be used to express your idealism. History records that significant changes occurred because of the idealism of student organizations and young people during their college.

It would be even better if you joined an organization outside the campus, such as a non-profit organization. But be careful choosing the organization; do not join an illegal or banned organization. Fyi, banned organizations are rampant in recruiting on campus.

Get a job or doing business

Working or doing business is an activity that students can do while in college. This activity is essential to train students to know reality and be ready to become adult human beings.

Adult human life is not as easy and beautiful as it seems. By working or doing business, you can appreciate the value of work and struggle in life.

Learn other technical skills

In reality, other technical skills are needed in work or business that are not the area of your expertise in college. For example, some technical skills currently indispensable in real life are driving skills, foreign languages skills, and skills in using the latest technology.

Finally, the most important thing in college is enjoying the process of balancing study and life (study-life balance). Because being productive maximizes your potential, but not enjoying the process is a big mistake in college. You know what I mean!
